Hey Karen, hope everything is going well!
I had a couple questions:
How different is it working on Guardians of the Galaxy from Doctor Who (what are the differences)?
You've been involved with both television and movies... do your goals and desires lay in television or film, and what do you hope to accomplish?
Good luck in the future!
The differences are, is that the job is exactly the same, but the sets on Guardians were about 10 times bigger. I hope to accomplish good work in both television, cinema and theater.
I just wanted to say that my girlfriend and I are huge fans of your work with Arthur and Matt a few years ago! It was absolutely BRILLIANT! Nobody expected such a reinvention of the companion role like you did.
My girlfriend wants to know “How did you get to do Doctor Who?” Also, since you left the major television commitment, do you think that movies such as your new movie “Oculus” will be your new focus? Not specifically horror films, but films in general?
Thanks for all your energy and entertaining!
Hi girlfriend. I got to do Doctor Who because my agent got me an audition and I had to do a chemistry read with Matt Smith, and we just clicked.
Thanks for doing this AMA, I'm a huge fan, and can't wait for Guardians of the Galaxy which I'm sure you'll be great in.
My questions are:
What was your most memorable experience while working on Doctor Who
If you were stuck on a desert island with the basic essentials, what three additional things would you bring and why?
How did it feel when you got the part of Nebula in Guardians?
I'm really starstruck and you're just so beautiful and talented and I would probably just faint or run around my room screaming if you answered my questions.
Thanks again for doing this AMA and good luck on your future projects.
Working with two of my best friends; Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill, and being immersed in real cabbage. My initial feeling about being Nebula is that I would be bald.
Did you and Matt swap wigs filming the Time of the Doctor?
Obligatory thanks for the gilding edit.
No, but I wish more than anything, that we had.
As much as I absolutely adore Doctor Who and your role in it, I couldn't think of any questions that haven't already been asked about a bajillion times, so I'd just like to get something cleared up: Is your last name pronounced with a hard G or a soft G? I've heard it both ways and I'm really confused about it.
Also, how did you feel about shaving your head? It's a big decision and it's one I'm sure I could never make (kudos to you for that), but I can see how it might have some perks. Were you glad you did it or did you wish you hadn't?
Also also, I have another question on behalf of my friend who couldn't be here. She wants to know if you would ever do a musical with Arthur Darvill because she thinks it would be awesome.
BONUS QUESTION: What's your favorite color, or do you have one?
Okay, I'm done now. :)
It's a hard G. Thank you. It was scary, but very funny to shave my head. My favorite color is teal.
You recently(ish) moved to LA. Do you miss Scotland much? Or have you been kept busy enough to avoid homesickness?
EDIT: And thanks for doing this, I adore you!
I miss Scotland so much. All of my friends and family are there and I miss the rain.
Hello. I am looking forward to seeing you in Guardians of the Galaxy. Is there a certain genre of movies you want to be in? Will you go back to doing TV? I guess what I am trying to ask is what do you want to with your acting career? Have an awesome day. Also you are my favorite companion.
All I care about is producing good work, no matter what genre. I would love to strike a nice balance between comedy and dramatic acting.
Hi Karen! What is your honest opinion on fish fingers and custard?
It should be tried by all.
I run the Doctor Who club at my college, and we would really appreciate if you can just say hello to all of us in the University of New Mexico Whovians. Thanks if you can! :) I can't wait to see you in Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thanks for doing an AMA!
Hello to everyone at the University of New Mexico Whovians! Thank you for your support.
Would you ever come play a game with us on my show Tabletop?
Sounds like fun! Will there be beer?
Big fan! My question is: In Oculus you have a nearly 13-minute monologue, how hard was it to shoot that scene considering you had to do it with an American accent?
It was the hardest thing I ever had to learn. It took me 2 months. If you think of the memory like a muscle, I pulled it.
Favorite candy? - I ask all the important questions ;)
Cadbury Cream Eggs are my favorite.
Karen! If you were ever at a comicon (not as a guest but as a attendant) what series would you be "nerding out" the most over?
If the X-Files were at comicon now, I would freak out. Gillian Anderson is the greatest redhead there ever was. I want to believe.
I always love your sense of style! What's your fashion inspiration?
I love the 1960s. I like Jean Shrimpton, who I was lucky enough to play in a biopic.
Are you a cat or a dog person?
I used to have a friend called Brian. He was a tortoise.
What is the best dinosaur?
Pterodactyl. They get to fly and be a dinosaur.
Pterodactyls are a pterosaur, not a dinosaur.
Talk to Spielberg.
If you could be any alien from the Doctor Who series, which would you be?
I would be a silurian.
What was your favorite part about filming Oculus? Was it different starring in a horror movie than it was starring in Doctor Who?
The film was a lot darker in tone than any of the episodes of Doctor Who, but it was the most joyous experience. I laughed so much.
If you could play any historical character, who would it be and why?
I want to play Lady Macbeth. I know she's not a historical character, however I want to play her so badly.
what do americans sound like to you? who do you imitate when you speak "american"?
In the UK, we are heavily influenced by American entertainment, so I grew up familiar with the accent. I even played Barbies in an American accent.
What's your favorite thing to do when not working?
Play my piano.
What's your favorite type of sandwich?
My ideal sandwich would consist of avocado, chicken, pepper, and bread with seeds.
Have you ever been in a hot air balloon?
No, but if I ever get married, that's how I would like to arrive at the altar.
Time for a hard-hitting question from a female fan: what shampoo do you use? Your hair is quite stunning.
I don't really have a specific shampoo. I change them up. I think it's better to be natural with that stuff.
Oculus looks really scary, should i still see it? also loved the work you did with Doctor Who, I was really sad to see Amy Pond go :(
Thank you very much. And you need to see Oculus.
I loved watching Doctor Who and seeing what color your nails were going to be each episode. Are they real and do you paint them yourself??
They are real, and I painted them myself every day to save time for the make-up artist.
The year is 1998. Do you choose Playstation or N64?
Playstation all the way.
FAVORITE "FULL HOUSE" ACTOR?
P.S. C'mon, its Stamos isn't it?
What is that?
Hey Karen! I absolutely love Amy Pond to death and wish there could be more of you and Arthur. One question: in a lot of films and TV actors take little items of memorabilia to remember their time on the show. Did you take something, and if so, what was it?
I'd totally hijack the TARDIS on my way out.
I took the binoculars from the Tardis.
Hey Karen, what's your favorite part of Scotland? Of the World?
My favorite part of Scotland is my hometown, Inverness. It's beautiful and has my family in it. My favorite part of the world is the same place, but my favorite place to travel to is New York.
Karen, my son thinks you're pretty. He's almost four, so back off.
That's so adorable. I bet he says that to all the girls. Tell him I said hi. What's his name?
His name is Parker. And I'll totally tell him. (:
Can you tell us one secret about Matt?
Matt eats a whole packet of chocolate biscuits a night with tea.
How did you get involved with NTSF:SD:SUV? Were you friends with Paul and June prior? Some other mutual connection?
I met Paul Scheer at an improv show and then later he offered me the role.
I am a huge fan but just have one question. What is your honest opinions on bow ties?
Secretly cool, but don't tell anyone I said that.
Hi Karen, I'm really excited to see Guardians of the Galaxy, and I loved Amy Pond! I have a few questions for you: 1- Do you think you're going to work again with Matt or Arthur?
2- Do you have other projects coming on the big screen?
3- How was it to come back on Doctor Who for Matt's regeneration scene?
4- Favorite Amy Pond outfit?
5- I'm French and I was wondering if you're going to go to France to promote Guardians of the Galaxy or other movies? Or maybe for a Doctor Who convention? :)
I think that's all but maybe I'll think of something later :)
I would love to work with Matt or Arthur, to be reunited with them would be the most fun. I have a film called Oculus coming out on April 11th. It was the saddest thing I've ever seen, to see his last scene as the doctor. Kissogram was my favorite outfit. I love France. I love to go to Paris, so hopefully will be there one day soon.
Hi, I love you and my fiancee loves you too.
Just has one question : your cousin was funny and cute in Doctor Who. How is she doing and does she want to be a professional actress ?
Also, I was wondering if you could write "Hi Anaïs" on a piece of paper and take a picture of you holding it as a present for our wedding tomorrow ?
It's okay anyway, thanks for everything you've done for everyone.
She is a fantastic little actress and I'm sure she will do very well in the future. Happy wedding!
How was it working with Katee Sackhoff in Oculus?
She is an inspiration to me. She is a sci-fi actress who's gone on to do amazing things.
What is your favourite piece or song to play on the piano?
I like to play my own stuff. I like to make my own music.
Would you rather fight a horse sized duck? Or 100 duck sized horses?
Definitely a horse sized duck. I just think a giant duck is brilliant.
What would it take to win your heart? The internet must know
Cadbury eggs and bad jokes.
