2 Questions, one from me and one from my son. First my son. He is 5 and he loves 2 things in this world - Indiana Jones, and the Foo Fighters. He has been going to bed every night listening to “Wasting Light” and refuses to listen to anything else. When I found out you were doing an AMA, I asked him to think about what he would want to know from his favorite musician, and this was what he came up with:

Michael asks Dave anything

"What is your favorite Indiana Jones movie?"

Second question: Rock music is constantly evolving, and the Foo Fighters have found a way to stay at the leading edge of what defines rock. With all of the different styles of rock these days, what up and coming band do you think really represents rock and roll, and who do you hope to see carry the torch when you decide to pass it along?

Thanks for the question Michael! My favorite Indiana Jones movie has to be Raiders of the Lost Ark because of the drinking scene.

Weirdest thing you have owned or own currently? Love you and your music man. Don't stop anytime soon.

Hey Dave, I saw you live at Leeds in August and you fucking rocked! I just wanted to know...what was it like making out with a sex doll on stage? It was fucking awesome!!

Same as always.

Do you have a "Crepe" - a food that's really good but halfway through a plate of them you hate to eat?

any salad.

Dave, how unreal was it to jam with Paul the first time? I know if i could jam with you i would absolutely play the hardest i ever have. Thanks for the opportunity to ask my hero a question.

The first time I jammed with Paul was at a stadium in Liverpool, I played Back in the USSR, Band on the Run, and I Saw Her Standing There and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

[deleted]

Auckland, New Zealand. We triggered a seismic event with our show.

What moment made you realize you had made it?

Fuckin AMA on Reddit, baby.

Hey Dave, I've seen the band twice and you guys are by far my favourite live band. My question is, what is your favourite smoothie to make? Also, how skilled are you at drawing? Thanks!

I serve my kids something from a cup - I don't exactly smash bananas, and I'm really good at drawing dicks.

Do you have a lunch box full of dick drawings?

Ask Butch Vig if he kept all of his

You're one of the most hilarious people I know. When will you host SNL / have your own comedy show / take over the word with your comedic wit?

I saw Foo Fighters perform in ATL Nov of 2011. Hands down the best concert I've ever been to. 3 hours of pure rock joy. I live in San Diego now; I hope to see you guys perform here in the future. Mad respect.

Hosting SNL is the last item on my bucket list - so we'll see what happens

What's your most simple pleasure in life?

Being a father

Hey Dave.

I met you backstage after the show you guys played at the Izod Center in New Jersey back in September 2011. I handed you a CD of original songs and you were a great guy about it. You opened it up and read the song titles and told me you'd check it out. It was really awesome of you to show so much interest.

I also started chemo two days after we met. You wished me good luck and every day in the hospital when I was down I thought, "I can do this, DAVE FUCKING GROHL wished me good luck." And sure enough, here I am.

It's a long shot but my question is do you remember me and did you ever listen to my CD? Thank you for doing the AMA and for supplying the world with copious amounts of amazing music.

You're my hero.

-Eric

Also, here's the badass picture we took: http://imgur.com/QpnJDCV

Eric, where have you been man? Yes, I listened to your CD! I always listen to CDs bands give me. My question to you is how's the music coming along?

How was working with Jack Black and Kyle Gass? Will you be working on more Tenacious D records with them in the future?

So hard to play the drums when you're laughing hysterically and tears are rolling down you cheeks. Maybe the hardest gig ever. And: YES

After the infamous FRESH POTS! incident when recording with Them Crooked Vultures, how much was your coffee intake reduced by?

I went decaf for one month, and then went back to regular coffee in moderation, and I've now developed a tolerance to caffeine so that I can drink even more fresh pots.

Thank you for taking the time to do this AMA Dave. Huge fan.

What is more fun for you: playing guitar, drums, or singing?

DRUMS

What does it feel like to hear a crowd screaming and cheering because of YOUR music? I imagine it must feel so good...

It's the best feeling in the world. We have a theory in the Foo Fighters that if you've ever taken an 8 x 10 photo, you want to be famous. So all that "I don't want to be famous BS can kiss my ass."

What's your favorite venue that you've ever played at?

That would be probably be Wembley.

Hey Dave, I’m from Northern Virginia, and you’re my hero. You’ve had such a huge impact and been a role model to me and others, which got me wondering: Who was your hero? I know in My Hero you refer to the ordinary heroes out there, but was there any specific person, musical or not, who made you a significantly better man?

i think my biggest musical hero growing up was probably Ian MacKaye he set a great example for all of us local musicians. still to this day i see him as the best example of a right-on musician.

Have you ever wanted to write a book?

Nope. Not yet.

Hey Dave, the Almighty Rock God and King of Reddit,

At the Forum back in 2011, I remember you stopping at the beginning of "these days" to tell the audience that this was your most favorite song that you've ever written. I also got the chance to see the Foo's perform at Pukkelpop last year. You guys chose to dedicate "these days" to the victims of the Pukkelpop storm, so it obviously has great meaning.

1. What personal experiences led you to write "these days"?

2. How the hell did you end up hosting Chelsea Lately for a week?! I mean it was totally awesome, especially with Elton John and the D, but I never would have guessed to see you there. By the way, you rocked and need your own Dave Lately show!

3. Can you give us any tips on what awesome things might happen at SXSW since you are the keynote speaker this year?

4. Have you ever swallowed your gum while performing?

Chelsea needed a week of binge drinking in London. So they called the second best binge drinker in town to fill in.

Hey Dave! Thanks so much for doing this AMA! The Foo Fighters was one of my first favorite bands (and still is), and you’ve done so many great things for the music industry. We all appreciate that you’re doing this! My questions:

  1. What has been the most memorable moment in your entire music career so far?
  2. As a musician, who do you admire the most?
  3. I’m really confused about the status of the Foo Fighters right now. Are you guys on hiatus or are you planning on recording another album any time soon?
  4. What was it like playing with Elton John on the new QOTSA album?
  5. Any words of wisdom or advice for those of us who want to become good musicians?

Thanks, Dave! You’re the best! the best, the best…

like pat smear says.. we're not on hiatus.. we're on "i hate us" and yes, we are already writing the new record.

Hi Mr Grohl, I'm - like most others here - a huge fan!

I have a few questions for you:

1) Now the Foos are on hiatus for a while, Sound City is out and ready to buy (which I plan to do soon) and QOTSA are working away, will there be room for, maybe, another Them Crooked Vultures outing? If not, then what can you tell us about the new Queens album?

2) What's your favourite album to chill/drink/work to?

3) After having a cameo role in The Muppets, how does it feel to be Animal's equal, given the pedigree of that character's origin?

1) I don't know Ask Al. 2) Paris Texas Soundtrack 3) Animal has no equal, I was merely an impostor

What has been your best experience whilst making the movie?

Getting accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. That was huge.

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR BEARD SO LUSCIOUS

FISH OIL

Hey Dave, you are known as the nicest man in rock, but if you could pass that title onto anyone else, who would you choose? :)

Fuck you.

If you could eat one thing and only ONE thing, what would it be?

Fried fucking chicken.

Remember Thomas Jefferson High? The school that you attended and where you started the still continuing tradition of blasting music in the morning? Would you like to visit us? I will give you a tour and if you get lucky we'll take you out to 5 Guys.

I would love to! There's a pic of me there.. anybody have it?

I can never remember if it was you that I used to live about 3 blocks from a long time ago, or if it was Chris Cornell. If you lived in Seatac near Game Town in/around ~1990, I think I lost my baseball in your yard. Do you happen to still have that?

what the fuck are you talking about?

Any advice for a budding musician?

Watch the Sound City movie: http://www.soundcitymovie.com

1) Are there any plans for a follow up to Probot or Them Crooked Vultures?

2) If QoTSA are touring for their upcoming album, are you planning on touring with them?

3) Are there any artists you'd like to work with who you haven't had a chance to yet?

4) Can I hang out with you and Lemmy sometime?

1) No Probot plans yet, but never say never 2) Nope 3) Yes 4) Absolutely, see you at the Rainbow

What's the best advice to give to a 17 year old drummer?

Listen to Back in Black

Dave! Huge fan! I bought your movie for me and one for my friend it was fantastic.

A few quick questions for you. I go to Bishop Ireton highschool in Alexandria and we tend to like to brag that you went there for a little while. What was it like while you were there? Did you like it? Would you ever come back? We all pretty much love you there.

Also, did you carpool with a guy named Bill? There's a rumor a current religion teacher used to carpool with you.

Thanks for doing the AMA!

i was not smart, not catholic and not in the carpool lane. but they had a galaga machine in the lounge so i waited a few years to drop out.

When you're at a concert, what's the first thing that goes on your mind?

If it's my concert - where's catering. If it's a Sound Garden concert - where' the tequila.

Do you think "Pretender" sounds like the kid song, "One of these things is not like the other"?

I have no idea what you're talking about... ;-)

Hey Dave my question for you is, do you think "Grunge" will ever make a comeback? If so what are your thoughts on that?

If you mean loud ass guitars, loud ass drums, and screaming ass vocals? That never went away ding dong.

Dave are there any bands that you feel like don't get enough recognition and if so who?

That list is too long to write today. There's so many.

Dear Dave Grohl,

If I were at a Foo Fighters show and wished to propose to my special someone, would you help me out?

(Also, any chance that the Foos may come to Halifax, Nova Scotia someday?)

You're on your own, pal. And yes, we'd love to come to Halifax.

I do not have a clue how to use Reddit so question 1 is... will you make a dummy guide to Reddit? kthx ALSO, has directing sound city wet your tongue for directing more films or was it just another tick on the bucket list?

i would definitley do it again but only if it were as important to me as Sound City

You should play Wheels more often, It's too good of a song to not be played. Anyways, enjoy a picture of you with a cat

[x-post from r/foofighters]

What are you German? (The song is huge is Germany) (and only Germany)

SHIT I CANT THINK OF A QUESTION AND THIS IS MY ONLY CHANCE TO SPEAK TO DAVID FUCKING GROHL

FUCK

Edit: Uhhh If you could assemble a band to play with using any musicians from the past or present who would be in it and what would be your role?

EditEdit: ITS SOMETHING!

http://youtu.be/7DqUTwK6cBk

Dave!! I would love to know what your favorite book is (or what you are currently reading). You rock!!! (and reading rocks, too!) :P

Reading does rock! ive played that festival like 10 times!! waitt.. wat?

Dave, first of all, loved you in The Moopets man. Two questions,

  1. What is your guilty pleasure?
  2. If you could form a super group of artists, who would it be?

1.) I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I think you should like what you like, and like it. 2.) And my super duper group would be Them Crooked Vultures.

Want to play an acoustic set at our SXSW party?

(This is Consequence of Sound)

Call me

You've collaborated with an absolute metric tonne of musicians. Who's one you've always wanted to but have never had the chance?

Second Probot album: yay/nay?

Recommend me 5 albums that came out in 2012.

Malcolm Young

Hey Dave,

16-year-old here, how can I convince my mother to let me go see the Sound City Players in NYC next week?

Tell her Stevie Nicks will be there!

What's your gamer tag?

JK, JK. Real question, if you were to learn a new instrument, any instrument you can't already play, what would it be?

Also, why "Foo Fighters?" Are you guys Carl Douglas fans or something???

P.S. I love you guys, keep doing what you're doing. Please.

Umm.....sitar. sitars are kinda rad.

DO you ever get to jam Kyuss songs with Homme?!??! Id lose it!! Cant wait for new QOTSA esp after working with sir elton? HOW WAS THAT!?!

Nope. :( - Elton is great and works very hard in the studio. Check out what he had to say! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2-LKSHt0Uk

Hey Dave,

I caught a screening of Sound City and loved it. Totally inspired me to get back into creating music. It's a dream of mine to record to tape but I just don't have the funds. What would you say about artists who record at home on their laptops due to funds?

There's nothing wrong with digital recording - just make sure it sounds like YOU.

Which one of your songs means the most to you and why?

Probably "Walk" - which i wrote for my daughter as I was teaching her to walk.

Maybe a bit cheeky but it's my birthday today and you're a hero of mine, can I get a happy birthday? :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Hey Dave, i could ask a million questions but after long thought I've dwindled it done to these three questions and it would mean the world to me just to have you respond

1) If you weren't in one of the greatest rock bands of recorded history, what would you be doing for a living?

2) If Kurt was still with us today, would nirvana still be together? or would you still have gone made the Foo Fighters?

3) In one word, how would you describe your journey from going from nothing to the biggest grunge band, back to almost nothing again, then becoming a legend of rock, and now making movies and playing in mega groups?

Thanks you for taking your time and doing this AMA, and not to mention you music! keep rocking Dave!

1) I would be the greatest dry waller in recorded history.

2) Impossible to answer.

One night, after going on and on about how awesome Dave Grohl was, my wife stopped me and said "You know, Dave Grohl poops just like the rest of us?"

So I got to know, do you really poop or was my wife trying to shut me up?

PS. Can I direct a music video for the next album? It's a life goal of mine and I can provide references. I will have even more references by the time the album is ready to come out. Please?

I do. BIG ONES

In a Yahoo Music chat in 1999 I asked:

If Foo Fighters had to have Spice Girl-like nicknames what 'Foo' would you be?

At the time you said 'Scary Foo' what about 14 years later?

Probably, Posh Foo..

If you were president what are the first 3 things you'd do?

  1. change the way people decide who is president.
  2. resign.

Hey, Dave. I'm really glad that you're doing this. You are one of my all-time favorite musicians and my inspiration as a (very mediocre, but enthusiastic) drummer. I'm shit at thinking of good questions, but here's what I'm came up with:

  1. I know your main concern when creating a setlist for a show is its flow. Are there any songs you would really like to play live that don't really fit well in a setlist?

  2. What is your favorite song that you've recorded or your favorite contribution to a song?

  3. Did your friend, Johnny Park, ever get in touch with you after TCATS was released?

  4. When can we expect another TCV album and tour?

  5. I know you've said you're not going to tour to new QOTSA album, but is there any chance of you playing (a) single show(s) with them?

  6. What are some of your favorite new bands on the scene?

  7. You've said before that when you see musicians acting in movies, it takes you out of the film, so you're not especially keen on acting yourself, but if you were offered a part in a movie or a TV show, what would be an acting opportunity that you couldn't turn down?

  8. Have you thought about playing any more shows like the mega-gig in Goat Harbor or possibly full-album like Weezer performed recently? Maybe somewhere in the Southeastern U.S.?

  9. It's probably not good form to ask this in your AMA, but do you know if Taylor plans to record another Coattail Riders album anytime soon? Might you play on another of his albums?

Sorry for bombarding you with all the questions. Any answers would be really cool and greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for doing this AMA. You are a really cool dude. Keep rocking.

  1. Yes, there are many. Some songs are great on album but not great on stage. So you have to choose wisely.
  2. My favorite song that I've ever recorded is probably Milk It by Nirvana. And I'll always love the chorus of of No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age.

Hi Dave, thanks for doing this AMA. This really means a lot to me. I'm sure across the world, your music has touched and helped countless people. And you've helped me a lot too.

I know this AMA is promoting Sound City, but ever since I heard you were doing this, I've just wanted to tell you how much impact your music has had on me.

When I was 8, I started being homeschooled. Ask anyone who does homeschooling, it's really tough. People who are homeschooled don't really get a chance to make friends, go to parties (all things that people who go to a school take for granted). This is the same for me, and I've struggled with this a lot. So, because I'm homeschooled, I'm a pretty lonely guy, and being alone can mess with your head. It can get me down a lot. So around last year, April 2012, I'm sitting in a Hard Rock Cafe in Madrid, eating some nachos, when I look around at the whole of the inside bit of the restaurant. I glanced up at one of the TV's and say a bearded guy, eyes clamped shut, singing with everything he's got. I looked at the writing in the corner of the screen, It said "Foo Fighters : Best Of You". Before then, I'd known about Foo Fighters, and Dave and Nirvana, but never really listened to them that much. So I'm sitting there, listening. I was amazed. So I go back to the hotel I was staying at, and the first thing I remembered I had some Foo songs on my iPod (because I share an iTunes library with my brother, and he likes FF aswell). So I grab my iPod, and put the Foo Fighter songs on shuffle. It must have been around 70 songs at the time, so I just sat there and listened. For around 3 hours. I couldn't believe I'd had this on my iPod but never listened to it.

After I'd finished listening, I went on Youtube, and watched interviews of Dave, back in his Nirvana days, early Foo days, more recently too. I watched full 2 hour concerts on YT, I bought Back And Forth on DVD, and when Reading 2012 came, I was so excited that I was going to be seeing Dave perform live, I couldn't sleep the night before. Even though I was only going to be watching it on TV. I hogged the TV that night, just so happy that I knew this was going on in the country I live in. For Christmas a couple of months ago, I got a Dave T-shirt that I'm wearing now haha, a Foo Fighters poster, Foo Fighter's : Live At Wembley DVD, and Foo Fighters : Greatest Hits. http://i.imgur.com/y7Q71EQ.jpg

That hole that I felt in my chest, a lot of it has been healed now, thanks to you, Taylor, Pat, Chris and Nate. You guys have helped a 14 year old kid in the South-East of England through a lot of tough times. I can never thank you enough for that.

It's my dream to see you guys play live/see you in real life/ get to meet you. You really are an inspiration to me, and my role model. The reason is because Dave has been through a lot of hard times, but he's always come back stronger. He's a funny, polite, kind guy, who is passionate about what he does. If I turn out half like that, I'll be proud of myself.

Now I know this is an AMA, so I've got a few questions. In the Back And Forth DVD, you mention about the process of narrowing down 40 or so songs, to 13-14. Is that difficult? What happens to those songs? And when the Foo Fighters inevitably retire (hopefully not soon), will you release the songs that never made it to the records?

I can't wait for the new album that you said you'll begin working on soon, hopefully I'll get to see you guys live at Reading next year when you're touring the new album.

Sorry for the essay of a comment, I hope you get a chance to read this, although I know your time is valuable and this is AMA is supposed to be about Sound City, but I don't think I'll ever get another chance just to say Thanks. That's why I'm staying up until 1 AM haha :)

PS. Statues is one of the most beautiful songs out there. I don't understand why more people don't talk about it, but then again, I love everything you guys put out.

TL;DR : Dave Grohl is my hero (pun intended) and him and his music has helped me through a lot of hard times.

Thanks Dave. :) - Toby

EDIT : To be honest, I think he's probably seen this comment by now, he just didn't want to read all of what I have written, which is fair enough. I'm starting to regret how much I've written, but, Chance = Blown, I'm afriad. I'm enjoying this AMA though, it's up there with Snoop Lion's :D

EDIT 2: Don't know what to say. Feeling pretty upset.

EDIT 3: Well, I'm going now guys. Thanks to the people who helped me when I was feeling down. It really helps. And obviously thanks to Dave for a kick-ass AMA, and thanks for answering my question. Bye guys.

TLDR

Bye guys.

Hey Hufftey, I just read through all of this. Left over songs sometimes get re-worked and put on the next album. We actually have one songs called "Seven Corners" we've recorded for every Foo Fighters album but has never made it.

If you could pick one band to induct into the RRHoF, who would it be?

Soundgarden.

What if one of your daughters came to you and said they want to do what you did and drop out of high school to join and tour in a band?

Haha we'll cross that bridge when we come to it

DAVE DAVE, HEY DAVE can you please upload a clip of you speaking through a whistle? Heard you're quite the master :)

Also, what's your favourite pig out food? :D

thanks for coming here by the way, you know.. we've waited for you a long time

3 hours by the F5 button, no regrets

No. it has to be live.

Do you think the Foo Fighters will ever work with Steve Albini?

I would love to. Steve is a good friend.

Hi Dave! I have three questions to ask

• The opening song you played in Argentina with Nirvana in October of 1992, was that just a jam or was it a cover? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2cJ7_ly6hY (PS, this YouTube channel has a ton of old Nirvana videos, in case you wanna relive some memories ;P)

• Did you guys actually play a cover of We Will Rock You by Queen at this show? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu-EFWhq_8g

• How was your bum after the fire here? http://i.imgur.com/of1TjIx.jpg

1) I don't have the foggiest recollection of that song, but my guess is that if you don't know it - I don't know it. 2) Did we? 3) Ask Steve Albini

Is there any food that you wouldn't put bacon on?

Righteous hair, by the way.

Nope.

POCKETWATCH!!! Will it ever be re-released? Why didn't more of those songs make the first Foo album?

Ask Jenny Toomey! Because that was it's own album.

Hey Dave! I'm a huge fan!

•Who was your favorite person to work with in Sound City?

• What are you moving forward with after releasing Sound City?

• If you were stranded on an island with only one other musician, who would it be and why?

1) There were all amazing, but a day in the studio with Lee Ving will change your life. 2) Foo Fighters! 3) Chris Angel. Wait, did you say magician?

What is your opinion on modern music? What artists do you find being worthwhile listening to that have come out recently?

http://youtu.be/7c4cDy0XQOM

Hi Dave! I am an extremely big fan of you and your music! I have two questions:

How does it feel to be the one who inducts Rush into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

What is your favorite album that you have helped make or been apart of?

Thanks for doing this again!

1) I haven't done it yet. BRB 2) Probably ... Wasting Light

Hey Dave,

From the first day of Foo Fighters you've been using Gibson, why? Did differentiating yourself from the early "grunge" scene which had many Fender players have anything to do with it?

Nope, I just loooove Gibsons.

What was it like to counter-protest the Westboro Baptist Church? You guys did a kickass job with your delivery. Why the fuck were they even protesting in the first place?

Look. I'm going to hell anyway, might as well go out in style...

Do you remember Roll's Music in Falls Church? I think they're gone now, but I bought my first electric there and would constantly be there poking around as a kid. They'd always proudly brag that Nirvana's drummer used to shop there just a few years prior. Always wondered if it was true.

It is true, but when i applied for a job there at 16, they turned me down..

what's your favorite venue to play? smaller clubs like the metro in chicago, stadiums, or huge outdoor festivals?

Paladinos in Reseda

Dave I've been wondering this forever... What was with the square tattoo you used to have on your left arm???

It was a homemade John Bonham three circles logo

What is one piece of advice you can give to people on their 20s trying to find a career that will support themselves without sacrificing their passions

You will only be great at the things you love to do. Don't pursue a career in something you hate to do.

Hey Dave! My roommate is in love with you and all your work and he would DIE if i could tell him that i got you to listen to his music!! What do you say, can you take a listen? Thanks!

Edit: here's a link to their facebook page! There's a link to their bandcamp on there as well to download

We just blasted it in 606!

Thanks for your music, huge fan of Nirvana, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, and every recording I've heard you on!

Yes - many. Lots.

If you could choose between flying and turning invisible which power would it be? Oh, and it only happens while you're peeing.

peeing while flying sounds messy...and if you're invisible, your pee is gonna give you away. so...huh?

Hey dave love your work.

  1. Do u still play with a click track?

  2. WHEN ARE YOU COMING BACK TO SYDNEY!?

1) Sometimes, depends on who's producing. 2) Soon.

Testicles. That is all.

balls.

What kind of vocal warm ups do you do?

3 Coors Lights and a shot of Crown Royal. Boom!

Thanks for stopping by, Mr. Grohl. I saw Foo Fighters in Council Bluffs back in May 2011, and in KC a couple months later. Those concerts were the two best nights of my life, and made me want to form a band and make music. My questions are:

  1. What advice do you have for young musicians/bands who want to "get out there"?

  2. How come you only use the bridge pickup on your guitars?

  3. Will the Sound City album be released on CD/vinyl any time soon?

  4. Will there ever be another Probot album?

  5. Do you have any more secret projects up your sleeve?

Thanks again for doing this, and thanks again for all the music you've made. It's gotten myself and many, many others through a lot.

  1. Get out there. Play show, write good songs. And be a great live band.

Dave, as a teen what was your favorite hardcore punk band you listened to?

Bad Brains

My mom met you and said her favorite song of yours was "Geek Stink Breath". I sincerely apologize on behalf of my family.

that's ok... let moms be moms, tell her i say Hi..

What do you do between concerts to pass time while driving?

Watch movies and talk shit

Major respect to you and I'm a massive fan!

1)Hi Dave, you're obviously a kick-ass musician, but you also seem to be the best rock star dad in the world. How do you manage to do everything but seem to keep a great balance?

2) I loved Them Crooked Vultures, anything happening in that department soon?

3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXeEJFC_SK4 This was amazing, can you explain your thought process?

Thanks for the AMA Dave, keep making amazing music and take care!

1) Umm... Having kids has changed the way we work as a band. It use to be Foo fighters was the most important thing in the world, but now our children are. So we make them first priority and they help us make better records.

When did you decide to go by Dave and not David?

It wasn't my decision. Never pick your own nickname.

Dave,

So many awesome people were featured in Sound City. Everyone who saw the first showing at the Belcourt in Nashville just loved it! Who do you wish could have been in Sound City Movie that wasn't? Perhaps someone that is no longer with us?

i would have to say Pat Benatar. There weren't enough women in the Sound City movie and she's one of the greatest female rock singers of all time.

Is All My Life really about what everyone thinks it's about?

Yes

Hi Dave, what was it like working with Killing Joke in 2003, and is Jaz Coleman really as crazy as people and the media make him out to be? BTW great drumming on the album.

That was an incredible experience, they have always been one of my favorite bands of all time Jaz isn't crazy... he's just 1000 times smarter than anyone else.

I hope so. It will never be the same, but we'll see...

Hello, what is your favourite breakfast?

Bacon and Pillsbury orange rolls

First off, thanks for being fucking amazing. I bought/downloaded Sound city and it was everything I'd thought it would be. It gave me hope for the future of music and more appreciation for its past. My girlfriend and I each have a question:

Me: Elton John commented that you are one of the most respected musicians out there, which I agree with. Does the pressure to keep the bar high ever get to you? Do you think about the opinions of millions of fans when you make a new album or do you just kind of say "fuck it" and do what you do?

Girlfriend: You were a great host on Chelsea Lately this week. Is that something you would ever consider doing permanently?

Thanks for being you.

you: i do both. There is a lot of pressure for Foo Fighters to do well but it's one of the things that drives us to make great records. We still make each record like its our first or last.

Just curious Dave. How do you stay so humble, being that you are like the biggest rock star (in my book anyway) right now? And when will you tour again? And I cant wait for my copy of Sound City. Love you and all you do!!!

How do I stay humble? Because I'm the best at being humble.

Probably lying in bed with a laptop in front of me and a beer

Most of it rules but I'm not as well versed in thrash as I used to be. Make me a mix tape

At what point of your career did you start to feel like you were successful?

Was it a case of feeling success in your younger days as you played bigger shows, or did you always have the ambition and thought that you weren't successful until a certain thing was met?

Probably the first rent check that I paid from playing music...

I got a plane, wanna fly it?

I don't know how to fly, but I have flying dreams all the time... like last night.

My husband asked, "If Dave Grohl walked in the the door right now, what would you ask him?" I replied, "What kind of salad dressing do you like?" Because we're about to have dinner.

So there's my question: What kind of salad dressing do you like?
P.S. Thanks for all that you do!

im just gonna have to say - blue cheese

Do you like mexican music?

Yes. Menudo rules.

Hey Dave,

What's the biggest boundary musican's face, in your opinion? To clarify, what do you think seperates successful musicans from the rest?

Thanks for doing an AMA

https://soundcloud.com/soundcitymovie/whats-the-biggest-boundaries

Why is your home town of Arlandria so prevalent in your song writing?

First of all.. Arlandria sounds like a planet and secondly, it represents something very special to me..

How's your day been?

Hungover, actually.

Hey, Dave, huge fan. When you play the board game Monopoly, which piece do you choose to represent you on the board, and why? Also, which Pokemon is your favorite?

I used to use the iron, they've replaced it with a cat. and Rock.

Dude, me and my dad LOVE you. We just finished our foo fighters discography. What have you been doing since the hiatus started?

http://soundcitymovie.com

Dave, I really, truly admire all of your work. I mean, you were the drummer of arguably the biggest rock band of the 90s and are the guitar player/lead singer of one of the biggest bands of the 21st century, yet you still do good deeds for people, such as give a bartender a $1,000 tip after only one drink. Honestly, Dave, what keeps you grounded?

Also, what is your personal favorite Foos video?

Foos video? White Limo

Will you acknowledge my existence?

What would you rather fight? A horse sized duck or 1000 duck sized horses and why?

I asked my 6 year old Son if he had a question for Dave and he came up with this:

http://imgur.com/Kgk2otV

http://i.imgur.com/g66fzCg.jpg

I had the chance to see Sound City at Sundance, and I absolutely loved it.

My question is regarding the analog/digital subject. If it weren't for Pro Tools, Logic, etc., I wouldn't have had the chance to be where I am now working in the music business. Its not for lack of interest in recording in a studio, I just haven't had the opportunity. Working on that Neve would be a dream come true.

So, the question is, do you feel the role of technology has been important in opening up people to making music, that may not have had the opportunity otherwise? And, do you think its still important to learn the "old" ways in addition?

https://soundcloud.com/soundcitymovie/the-role-of-technology

This interview was transcribed from an "ask me anything" question and answer session with Dave Grohl conducted on Reddit on 2013-02-08. The Reddit AMA can be found here.
